Sub-Zero Colors

This morning we woke up to catch the first cloudless sky and the blazing sun outside our window:

Good thing I didn’t forget my SPF100 sunscreen.

All jokes aside, we did head to Tromso’s fjellheisen (funicular) to snap some cool shots while the “sun” was still out. It’s important to understand that the sun never truly comes up above the horizon, so if we can gain a bit of an advantage by gaining some height to catch more light, then carpe diem! Well, “diem”. We did get some beautiful shots, but it was freezing up there on the mountain overlooking Tromso, and I could feel the photons slowing down and refusing to enter my lenses, organic or otherwise.


In the evening, Larissa and I boarded a cruise that took us south of Tromso on a silent electric catamaran. This thing was awesome. Its quiet, rocking sway was so smooth it put the Australian couple next to us straight to sleep. The cruise promised us arctic tapas, served with unlimited hot chocolate, surrounded by beautiful fjords and….

AURORA BOREALIS!

After 3 nights of clouds, fog, and low visibility, all it took was some distance away from the busy light pollution of the city to see some stunning northern lights right outside of Tromso. Granted, I took these on a moving boat and I was struggling to find the perfect setting on my camera, but I think it came out alright for my first attempt!

Our cruise was truly fun because we got to enjoy some exquisite Norwegian cuisine, while listening to the tour guides delighting us with stories and trivia from everything concerning the sea, the lights and the cruise!

All in all, it was another fun-filled day full of colors, the dying solar rays blanketing the houses over Tromso during the day, and its solar flares interacting with magnetospheres to produce gorgeous northern lights during the night…
