Patterns and Colors

My second day in Singapore was busy. During the first half of the day, I visited the zoo and the furry, scaly and feathery residents that are permanently housed within. The zoo covers next to 28 hectares of land, and contains the largest colony of orangutans in the world. Fun fact: did you know “orangutan” is derived from “orang”, meaning “man” in Malay, and “hutan”, meaning “forest”, i.e. “Man of the Forest”? Sometimes I like to educate my readers!

The entire zoo was a feast for the eyes, so I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves:

In the early evening, I met with two friends from Geneva who, coincidentally, also happened to travel through Asia and were stopping through Singapore for a few days. Together, we passed through the Marina Bay Sands into the Gardens by the Bay. We saw the famous Singaporean Supertrees, the botanical gardens, the Flower Dome and the Cloud Forest, each more impressive than the rest. Singapore is renowned for its environmentally-friendly construction and design, not to mention its devotion towards protecting and conserving our rich natural resources. Most of the structures on display here were built with this in mind, and they are both self-sustaining and green (both in an ecological way, and… you know… colorally). Not to mention breathtakingly pretty!

We then caught the much-anticipated Garden Rhapsody featuring beloved musical pieces from The Phantom of the Opera, Chicago and Les Misérables, all rendered beautifully on the Supertrees themselves.

To conclude the night (or rather… to begin it as you’ll soon find out), we made our way to one of the many rooftop bars on top of the Marina Bay Sands called Cé La Vi, where we quaffed several cocktails, all within sight of the so-close-yet-so-far swimming pool overlooking the city:

I mentioned that the night had just begun. Well, after politely being told that my zoo-visiting attire was not “obeying the dress code”, we politely descended back down to the street level. A few moments later, we found ourselves near Clarke Quay, where we hopped several bars, and remained there until the early hours of the morning…
